Moving forward in 2020

We have missed our guests. It is the 12th season of Cosy Under Canvas this year, the bluebells are in bloom and the buds and leaves in the woods are about to burst. We are so used sharing this with our guests and enjoying its beauty at this time of year with you.

But we have been taking good care of the site in your absence and we are grateful for this distraction. We've pulled out brambles, tended to our WET system, re-laid paths and come up with lots of new suggestions for woodland activities, from bug hotels to natural mandalas.

After 7 weeks in this strange and uncertain situation we are all wondering when it will be safe to travel again. We don't know what to expect but we have been following the national and our industry news with interest. We are all thinking about the time when the lock down will be eased and an escape to the countryside is an option again.

Until then we must stay put, stay safe and be patient.

Beech Dome
Ash dome in the bluebells

But we are looking forward to welcoming you back after this difficult and worrying time and are planning for the safest way to do this. We want to offer you the peace and tranquility of our site, with safety measures in place to alleviate any concerns you may have about virus contamination.

Our domes are well spaced out and all have private toilets. Usually the kitchen facilities are shared and guests enjoy chatting while waiting for the kettle to boil or the bacon to fry, however we can bring social distancing measures into place to ensure that all our shared facilities are safe to use.

Each dome could have it's own box of kitchen essentials and sanitising necessities! Plates, bowls, cutlery, crockery, pots and pans. Plus sanitiser, gloves and masks. There'd be a set for everyone. If you're not cooking and eating round your campfire as most of our guests do, then you'd book a slot in the kitchen and eat at your very own designated table. There'd be one for each dome in the kitchen or lounge, more than 2m apart from each other and we'd pop your name on it so that you can leave your bits and bobs there.

The same when it comes to showering. Again, book your family slot and the washroom would be yours alone. We're a small site and there's rarely a queue for showers during normal times so we're confident that this wouldn't be troublesome!

And finally when it comes to cleaning, our standards are very high and our site is spic and span. We will carry out risk assessments and create new cleaning policies to identify areas that may need a deeper clean than previously. We will commit to more frequent cleaning and will document this for you to see. We will be totally transparent with you and be readily available to answer any questions that you may have before, during or after your stay.

To celebrate, we'll be releasing some great post lockdown offers once we have the go ahead to open so please keep following us.

We are really looking forward to welcoming you back to Cosy Under Canvas.

All the best Emma, Dan and the team x

The Ultimate Comfort Food, Jambalaya

It's a firm favourite with our family and the campers. It's as easy to cook over the fire as in a pan on the hob. So if you don't fancy getting outdoors you can still enjoy the rich, smokey taste of a Jambalaya.

Our recipe is for a veggie version but it's delicious with chicken and chorizo, fish or prawns. We have veggies and not in our household so sometimes I get 2 pots on the go!

Ingredients for 4

1 of each - onion, celery stick, pepper, carrot, garlic glove chopped small

Heat in some oil in a pot or pan and add the veg. Cook for 5 mins

1 teaspoon each - hot smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, dried oregano, dried thyme

Add to the vegetables and cook for 2 mins (add chicken at this point if using)

Add to the pan - 1 tin tomatoes, 600ml stock, 250g rice

Simmer for 10 mins for white rice and 15 mins for brown

Add to the pan - 1 tin sweetcorn, 1 tin black eyed beans

Simmer for another 5 mins until everything is cooked through (add fish at this point if using)

Serve in warmed bowls with crusty bread, a squeeze of lemon and some parsley. Simple!

Coronavirus and your stay at Cosy

Cosy Under Canvas will not be opening on 27th March 2020 as planned.

Obviously in line with recent Government advice against all non essential travel we will postpone our opening until it is safe to do so.

Of course an escape to the countryside is great for our health and well being and the site was almost ready to go so we are really disappointed not to be welcoming you and sharing Cosy Under Canvas with you.

We are working on a 2 week ahead basis and contacting guests to let them know it's no problem to move their bookings to a date later in the year. You can read our terms and conditions here but there will of course be no charge for changes made.

If we haven't contacted you and you would like to postpone your booking feel free to get in touch with some alternative dates this season and we will get those booked in for you.

We have extended our opening season until the end of October to incorporate half term so that there is some extra time to rearrange your stay.

We look forward to welcoming you to Cosy Under Canvas when it is safe to travel again.

Many thanks for your understanding. Take Care and stay safe. Emma x

Celebrate the inspirational women in your life

On the 8th March since 1910, International Women’s Day has been a time for people around the world to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

This International Women’s Day the campaign is focused on the difference individuals can make and we we want to help raise awareness by asking you to celebrate a relative, friend, neighbour or colleague, who is inspirational to you and who goes above and beyond to make a difference.

Tell us about someone special in your life, and we’ll pick the one that we think is most deserving to win a relaxing midweek getaway for 2 in one of our domes.

Just go to our Facebook or Instagram page and nominate the person you think most deserves to win a stay at Cosy Under Canvas. Don’t forget to tell us why they should be treated to this relaxing glamping experience.

The lucky winner will receive a 2 night stay for 2 people in a beautiful Cosy dome with their very own wood fired hot tub.

Perhaps your nominee has been there for you in times of need, done something amazing in your community city or workplace, been an inspiration to you or just been a true friend – whatever the reason then let us know.

Of course there are awesome men in our lives too so if you’d rather nominate your chap then feel free. It’s all equal in our woodland!

The competition closes on Mothers’ Day, the 22nd March 2020, after which we’ll select a deserving winner.

Guess our St David’s Day meal and win a Welsh Hamper and a Cosy voucher!

Cosy Under Canvas is in Wales, right on the border with England, and here we like to embrace all things Welsh.

The cosy blankets in our domes and lounge are made in Wales, the tasty produce in our ‘Cosy Cook Pots’ and ‘Breakfast in Bed Hampers’ is sourced in Wales. We provide lush smelling toiletries, made by a social enterprise in Wales and the delicious coffee provided in our kitchens is roasted in Wales.

1st March is St Davids Day or Dydd Gwyl Dewi (in Welsh). He is the patron saint of Wales but what else do we know about him?

He was born in 500 and founded a monastery in Pembrokeshire on the coast in the spot where St Davids Cathedral is today.

He was a renowned preacher and lived a simple life, reportedly only consuming leeks and water!

He performed miracles, the most famous being when people at the back of a sermon he was preaching complained they could not hear him, the ground on which he stood rose up to form a hill and a white dove settled on his shoulder.

This year, St David’s coincides with the 80th birthday of our Grandpa (who’s also called David), so we’ve decided to celebrate by cooking him a tasty 2 course traditional Welsh meal.

Guess our main course and dessert and you’ll be in with a chance of winning a Hamper celebrating all things Welsh, including one of our cosy blankets, some Welsh coffee and toiletries and a Welsh Love Spoon! Plus, we’ll throw in a discount towards a stay at Cosy.

To enter visit our Instagram or Facebook page and comment on the St David’s day post there with your guess.

We’ll reveal all on Sunday, St David’s Day, and draw the winner on Monday. So, there’s no time to lose…head on over to our Facebook or Instagram and start guessing!

6 Reasons to Visit Cosy this Autumn

We love Autumn! As the leaves turn golden brown the sun sets earlier, which means cosy evenings around the campfire taking in the stunning night skies don't have to be a late night affair.

Take a look at our favourite reasons to visit Cosy this autumn...

1. The Fun of Foraging

The countryside provides an abundance of fruit, nuts and fungi through Autumn, making foraging a great way to spend the day - there's nothing more satisfying that enjoying food that you've picked yourself.

As well as Sloes, Blackberries, Chestnuts and Hazelnuts, you can find some wonderful Giant Puffballs in the hedgerows and fields if you look carefully.

2. Indian Summers

Common in the Northern Hemisphere, Indian summers are periods of unseasonably warm, dry weather that appear in the autumn - which have become more common in recent years.

There's something particularly special about those extra days of warmth as the memories of summer wane and winter looms ahead!

3. Snuggling Down

We're called Cosy Under Canvas for a reason! All of our domes are equipped with wood-fired stoves as well as blankets, sheepskins and throws - plenty to keep you toasty and warm.

Each dome also has its own campfire - so grab one of the cosy blankets provided and snuggle up in the evening with a cup of warming mulled cider as the sun sets.

4. Changing Colours of the Wye Valley

In autumn, the Wye Valley comes alive with spectacular colour, as its beautiful landscapes turn shades of orange and gold.

Explore the rich colours of the wooded ravines, limestone gorges and rugged moorland slopes that make up the Wye Valley, or just snuggle up in a nearby pub and take in the views!

5. Star gazing in the Dark Sky Reserve

At Cosy, and around the Brecon Beacons, the area has been designated a "Dark Sky Reserve", with the skies protected from the light pollution from towns and cities.

With its earlier evenings, Autumn is the perfect time to take in the night sky as you enjoy supper around the campfire.

6. Autumn Walks

There are plenty of amazing walks nearby whatever your ability and appetite - stride a section of the Offa's Dyke Path that runs along the Wales/England border or pick up part of the stunning 136 mile Wye Valley Walk that runs the length of the River Wye.

If you'd prefer to take in the scenery on two wheels than two legs, we've got a selection of bikes available for hire and can provide routes and maps whatever your ability.

Like the sound of it?

Great Ways to Reconnect with your Kids

With articles in the press suggesting that technology is interrupting the precious relationships formed between you and your children why not make this summer the one to really re-connect with them.

Children playing outdoors at Cosy Under Canvas

Children are spending more time on screens and less time chatting and hanging out with their families. Are you longing to have real conversations with them again!

With no phone or WiFi signal on site at Cosy Under Canvas, it’s the perfect destination for a full on family digital detox and the chance to bring back the family banter!

Connect with nature

Sometimes it’s not obvious, but the woodland is filled with small animals, bugs and insects. The kids can learn about who lives in the trees and on the ground.

Child exploring nature - finding a frog

Guides and fun activities are provided in the Cosy Corner to help you and them to identify the nature that’s on the doorstep and why not see if they can add some ‘interesting finds’ to the box in The Cosy Corner.

Fire up imaginations

Let the kids loose in the woods. Take a stroll with them and check out the boundaries of the woodland and then let them run wild.

They won’t be far away but can enjoy the freedom you did as a child, roaming free! Plus it’s an opportunity for you to kick back and relax in the hammock.

In the evenings playing games and telling stories whilst wrapped up in a blanket round the campfire can help kids explore their imaginations.

Stay up late and stargaze together. The sky is beautifully clear here as there is no light pollution. Search for star constellations together and learn their names, and the myths and legends that provided them.

A cosy dome at night in the Dark Sky area

Make the hot tub your project

Get the kids involved in lighting one of the wood-fired hot tubs and enjoy a warm dip together. You can go in search of wood and kindling with them and even teach them how to use the axe to chop up your logs.

Whether they're old enough to relax in the tub and appreciate the peace, or would prefer to play and splash about, it's a great opportunity to connect.

Play real games

Shun the screens and choose to play a real game together that encourages a shared experience, a little friendly competition, fun and laughter!

There’s a ping pong table with bats, balls and a scoreboard plus the lounge room is full of board games suitable for all ages. Set up a marathon of Monopoly or grab Bananagram for a quick word game.

Explore Food

Cooking together on an outdoor fire is an exciting and adventurous activity for your kids to help out with.

Involving them in the cooking also helps connect the final dish to the ingredients, helping them gain a better understanding of where their food comes from and encourages them to explore different tastes.

Order a Cosy Cook Pot during your stay, it’s a box full of the correct quantities of tasty local ingredients plus a recipe card for you to cook up a campfire storm.

Eating food together is an opportunity to share stories and news and build connections, it’s not often everyone gathers around the table over a feast these days especially without a device in sight!

Get out & about

Hire the mountain bikes we have here and go for a cycle together.

Apart from the health benefits, cycling is more adventurous and exciting than walking and is also a faster way to get around and absorb the scenery.

Children Riding Mountain Bikes at Cosy Under Canvas

Be as adventurous as you like, a quick cycle to the pub or an off road trail…we can suggest the best route to suit you and yours.

And if they really need to be connected

Set up a healthy competition to see who can take the best photos during your stay.

Rather than posting them, get traditional and print them off in a collage when you get home to remind you of your stay.

Dark Skies over Cosy under Canvas at Night

6. Stare at the stars

What could be more romantic than gazing at the stars together? Get cosy in blankets round your campfire, reconnect and take in the amazing skies above.

The National Parks' dark sky status means on a clear night you can see the Milky Way, meteor showers and even nebulas.

7. Read romantic literature

Explore Hay On Wye, the famous town of books. Choose your favourite and sit in contented silence or read aloud to each other for more vivid characters and tangible adventures.

If you're not sure where to start, we've found this list of read aloud suggestions from Book Riot that we're going to try for ourselves.
